The English along with Wales Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
